SI –
The Early Days
In June 1957, Safety Industries of New Haven, CT, decided
to develop a materials handling division to capture
a larger share of this emerging high growth industry.
Thus, SI Handling Systems was formed as a division of
Safety Industries and located in their Howe Scale Company
facilities in Easton, PA.
 Shortly
after a fire destroyed the Howe Scale facility the Company
decided to sell their struggling materials handling
business. With capital raised through the sale of common
stock and some personal investment, L. Jack Bradt a
young engineer assigned to the material handling group,
purchased the business and formed SI Handling Systems,
Inc. (later Paragon Technologies, Inc.) in September
1958.
Over the next several years the start up company leased
office space in several locations in the Easton, PA and
neighboring Phillipsburg, NJ area and subcontracted manufacturing
until a new facility was constructed and opened in Forks
Township of Easton, PA in 1963.
